Project Summary

The Brief: Propose a physical product that the service-based brand WWF could launch. (Set by DCA)

The Problem: Through a range of secondary design-based research methods, four key insights around sustainable living were identified:

  1. Sustainable living is perceived as difficult to access and exclusive since alternatives can be expensive and hard to find.
  2. Sustainable living can feel overwhelming and pointless as it can require lots of small, personal changes that seem useless when big companies are still polluting.
  3. Consumer awareness towards climate change has increased during the COVID-19 pandemic since it gave consumers time to reflect on their personal values.
  4. COVID-19 has boosted the smart home market, leading to dual-parent families having an interest in social gaming via smart home devices.

The Proposition: A smart home product for young families that encourages sustainable living by offering achievable, accessible and affordable lifestyle changes whilst tracking the users individual and household environmental footprint.

The Solution

A smart home product for young families that encourages sustainable living by offering achievable, accessible and affordable lifestyle changes whilst tracking the users individual and household environmental impact.

Fits within the Home

The CMF of the device is styled to fit anywhere in the user’s home whilst still sparking the interest of every family member.

Environmental Footprint

Individual and household environmental carbon footprints can be visualised by connecting the device to other smart home devices.

Physical Avatars

Each family member can have a different wooden avatar to explore their own personal planet-friendly goals.
